Recorded and released in 1961, the Creed Taylor-produced session brought together a first-time trio of Konitz, bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones – a fertile ground for intuition over preparation and, with no piano, plenty of space for Konitz to explore his cool-toned, lyrical phrasing against Jones’ dynamic, polyrhythmic drumming and Dallas’ steady bass lines.
